The Weilenmann School of Discovery is very fortunate to be nestled in the mountains near Summit Park, Utah where we are surrounded by stands of aspens and conifers and meadows of sage and natural grasses.  This environment is perfect for exploring nature and gaining outdoor skills. The Outdoor Education program is a blend of environmental science and experiential education.  Our focus will be on learning about our natural world while gaining outdoor skills, such as hiking and snowshoeing.

Students will learn to appreciate the world around them by experiencing a variety of outdoor activities. They will gain self-confidence and problem solving skills through cooperative building experiences and make connections to the natural world around them.

Throughout the year we will be studying the topics listed below. These can change based upon weather, scheduling conflicts and acts beyond our control. Each grade level will be studying the same topic. However, the middle school students will study them more in depth.

* Environmental appreciation through nature journaling. The students will learn how to record their observations as well as express their ideas.
* Wetland and pond investigations. Toll Creek, behind Weilenmann, provides an excellent outdoor classroom for learning about our wetlands and the plants and animals that rely on it.
* Wildlife Ecology. In this unit students will earn about the wildlife of Utah and how they are adapted to their environment. We will also spend time learning about animal tracks.
* Winter and Snow Ecology
* Fire Ecology
* Utah plant identification/Dichotomous keys
* Leave No Trace ethics
* Bike maintenance skills - 6th, 7th and 8th grade only.  The students will learn trail etiquette, basic bike maintenance and safety.
* Outdoor skills such as knots, fire building and outdoor cooking.
* Navigation. In this unit the students will learn basic compass skills as well as learn to read a topo map.

Parents are welcome to join us.
